UK fashion brands are cancelling orders with no notice and devastating the lives of workers in poor countries.
We believe that Asda is one of the worst offenders.
Millions of people working in clothing and shoe factories are not being paid. They will struggle to put food on the table.
Will you contact Asda?
We need more brands to honour their contracts with their suppliers. We need them to commit to looking after their workers in this time of crisis.
Dear ASDA,
As one of the UK’s largest supermarkets, you have benefitted from record food sales through the lockdown.
But I am concerned about the way you are treating the businesses and the people who make the clothes and shoes for your George range. Orders have been cancelled and payments delayed - and you've even been asking for discounts on future deliveries.
Millions of people living in very poor countries with little or no social security could be left destitute.
- Please will you confirm – on public record – that all your brands will honour contracts with
suppliers made before the UK went into lockdown on 23 March 2020?
This must include payment on the original contractual terms for finished products and payment for spend on unfinished products.
- Please can you also confirm how you are making sure that the people who make your clothes and shoes
are:
- paid for the work they have done
- paid while there is no work
- provided with suitable protective equipment where work is ongoing?
Please will you publish answers to these questions on an accessible part of your website so that consumers like me – and more importantly the suppliers and workers concerned – can be reassured about your actions?
Thank you,
