Currently trade rules block countries from taking vital climate action.
India, the UK, the USA, China and Canada are all countries which have seen their efforts to switch to renewable energy challenged under global trade rules.
In the “best” case scenarios, these challenges have led to the countries scaling back their plans, in the “worst” case scenarios the countries have scrapped their plans entirely.
For low-income countries, these rules also make it near impossible for them to switch to climate-friendly development. The latest technology for solar power, water conservation or electric vehicles is often developed in countries like the UK, and trade rules like patents then stop affordable versions being developed in the Global South.
Between 12-16th June, Governments will be meeting in Geneva for a bi-annual trade meeting. We’re calling for them to agree on a climate waiver, which will lift any trade rules that block climate action.
Sign our letter to the UK Government calling on them to push for a climate waiver at June’s global trade meeting.
